Tale Waves with Gilly Stewart: TALE018

Episode 18 of Tale Waves – the storytelling podcast for younger children – is a story featuring a time-travelling King, set in Farnham, Surrey.  It is entitled Meeting Charlie.

King Charles I – By follower of Anthony van Dyck – she-philosopher.com(original upload)Sothebys 2012 (higher resolution upload), Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=3852590

It is based on the true story of when King Charles I stayed overnight in Vernon House, in West Street, Farnham, en route to his execution in 1648.

King Charles’ royal finery, which he shared with Rose and Stanley.

In our story, when brother and sister Stanley and Rose visit Farnham’s library, adjacent to Vernon House, they are taken through a time vortex when they decide to go exploring, and end up meeting King Charles I.

King Charles’ white feather survived the time travel – but the gift of a ring did not.

While they introduce him to hip-hop music and they all enjoy a good dance together, the King introduces them to some of his finery – and leaves them with a white feather, and a poem through which they can remember their trip through the centuries.
